David Cangelosi

Artistic/Program Director

Internationally acclaimed Tenor, David Cangelosi, along with members of the Montgomery Symphony Association, established the Vann Vocal Institute in 2007. Now in its 11th season, Cangelosi continues to serve as its Artistic/Program Director. Bringing world-renowned opera stars and pianist/coach/conductors to Montgomery, Alabama to perform and educate, the Institute has hosted hundreds of aspiring vocal artists to the campus of Huntingdon College for this tuition free program. Maintaining a rigorous professional schedule, Mr. Cangelosi has recently completed an award winning, multi-year, performance and recording project of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen with the Hong Kong Philharmonic under the baton of New York Philharmonic Music Director Designate, Jaap van Zweden.

Mr. Cangelosi has performed with major opera companies and symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Saito-Kinen Festival (Japan), Santa Fe Opera, Canadian Opera Company, New York City Opera, Spoleto Festival (USA), Washington Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Los Angeles Opera, Boston Lyric Opera; and recordings with EMI, Classics London; Royal Covent Garden Orchestra, Naxos, and Newport Classics. Venue highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Paris; and the Musikverein, Vienna.  He was also featured in a full-length feature film of Tosca for the Venice Film Festival, and recorded the Forging Scene from ‘Siegfried’ with Placido Domingo for Wagner: Scenes from the Ring with EMI Classics.

Recent and upcoming performances include Der Ring des Nibelungen with Washington Opera and San Francisco Opera; Das Rheingold with Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, Moby Dick and Madame Butterfly with Dallas Opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with the Metropolitan Opera, Tosca and Eugene Onegin with Houston Grand Opera, Salome and Der Rosenkavalier with the Boston Symphony, Das Rheingold with Opéra de Montréal, and The Cunning Little Vixen with The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall in Cleveland, and subsequently on tour throughout Europe.

Mr. Cangelosi has maintained a close association with Lyric Opera of Chicago, performing dozens of roles over 20 consecutive seasons including his signature role of ‘Mime’ in Der Ring des Nibelungen. He made his 2004 Metropolitan Opera debut as ‘Mime’ in Das Rheingold conducted by James Levine, and has returned to the Met in recent seasons with principal roles in Andrea Chenier, Il Tabarro, and Tales of Hoffmann.

In addition to his duties with the Vann Vocal Institute, Cangelosi also serves as ‘Distinguished Artist-in-Residence’ at Huntingdon College in Montgomery Alabama, and actively travels the country as a recitalist, symphonic guest-artist, competition adjudicator, and Master Class instructor.
